Cefix Tablets Syrup Injections contains a useful drug which named as Cefixime. Cefixime Medicine is a third generation semisynthetic cephalosporin antibiotic. Cefix (Cefixime) Uses & Indications 

It is an orally cephalosporin antibiotic, which has marked in-vitro bactericidal activity against a wide variety of Gram positive & Gram negative organisms. Therefore, Cefix (Cefixime) Tablets Syrup Use for the treatment of the following acute infections when caused by susceptible micro organisms.

  • Upper respiratory tract infections (URTI): e.g. Otitis media, sinusitis, pharyngitis& tonsillitis.
  • Lower respiratory tract infections(LRTI): e.g. Bronchitis.
  • Urinary tract infections (UTI): e.g. cystitis, cystourethritis, uncomplicated pyelonephritis & uncomplicated gonorrhoea.

Invitro Activity 

Clinical efficacy has  demonstrated in infections caused by commonly occurring pathogens including

  • Streptococcus pneumoiae
  • Streptococcus pyogenes
  • Escherichia coli
  • Proteus mirabillis
  • Klebsiella species
  • Haemophilus influenzae (beta-lactamase positive & negative)
  • Enterobacter species.

Furthermore, it proves to be highly stable in the presence or beta-lactamase enzymes. Meanwhile, Cefix (Cefixime) Tablets Syrup has shown to be active in vitro against most strains of the following organisms. However, clinical efficacy has been established.

  • Streptococcus agalactiae
  • Haemophilus parainfiuenzae (beta-lactamase positive & negative stains)
  • Proteus vulgaris
  • Pasteurella multocida (p, septica)
  • Providencia species
  • Salmonella species
  • Shigella species
  • Citrobacter diversus
  • Serratia marcescens

Cefix Dosage & Administration

Absorption of the medicine is not significantly modified by the presence of food. Meanwhile, the usual course of treatment is 5-14 days.

Adults & Children Over 12 years:

The recommended adult dose is Cefix (Cefixime) 400 mg one capsule daily.

Children: 

The Dose for children is 8 mg/kg/day once daily. However, as a general guide for prescribing in children, the following daily doses in terms of volume of paediatric oral suspension are suggested.

Children 1-4 Years:

5ml daily (1 teaspoonful).

Children 5-9 Years:

10ml daily 92 teaspoonful).

Children 10-12 Years:

15ml daily (3 teaspoonful). However, the Cefix dosage in children aged 6 months to one years should calculated on mg/kg basis. On the other hand, children weighting more than 30 kg or older than 12 years should treated with the recommended adult dose. Most importantly, the safety & efficacy of the medication has not established in children aged less 6 months.

The Elderly:

Elderly patients may be given the same cafix dose as recommended for adults. Meanwhile, Renal function should assessed & dosages should adjusted in severe renal impairment.

Dosage In Renal Impairment 

It may administered in the presence of impaired renal function. Consequently, Normal Cefex dose may given to patients with creatinine clearance 20ml/mi or greater. On the other hand, In patients whose creatinine clearance is less than 20ml/min, it recommended that a dose of Cefix 200 mg once daily should not exceeded. Furthermore, the dialysis or haemodialysis should follow the same recommendation as that for patients with creatinine clearances less than 20ml/min.

Contraindications For The Use Of This Medicine

Most importantly, the medicine is contraindicated in the patients with known hypersensitivity to cephalosprin antibiotics.

 Precautions & Warning Information

Cefix (cefixime) 200 MG 400 MG Tablets should not given with caution to patients who have shown hypersensitivity to other drugs. Meanwhile, Cephalosporins would be given with caution to penicillin-sensitive patients. As there is some evidence of partial cross allergencicity between the penicillin and the cephalosporins. However, If an allergic effect occurs with the drug should be discontinue. On the other hand, it should  administered with markedly impaired renal function. Treatment with broad-spectrum antibiotics alter the normal flora of the colon and may permit overgrowth of clostridia. Meanwhile, studies indicate that toxin produced by clostridium difficile  a primary cause of antibiotic-associated diarrhea. But, Pseudomembranous colitis is associated with the use of broad-spectrum antibiotics (including macrolided, semi-synthetics penicillin, lincosamides and cephalosporins. Therefore, it is important to consider its diagnosis on patients who develop diarrhoea in association with the use of antibiotics. Consequently, symptoms of pseudomembranous colitis may occur during or after antibiotic treatment.

Use In Pregnancy And Breast Feeding 

Reproduction studies have performed in mice rats at doses up to 400 times the human dose. And have revealed no evidence of impaired fertility or harm to the fetus due to the medicine. However, there are no adequate and well controlled studies in pregnant women. Therefore it should not be used in pregnancy or in nursing mothers unless considered essential by the physician.

 Drug Interactions Information

However, No significant drug interactions have reported to date. But, A false positive reaction for glucose in the urine may occur with Benedicts or Fehlings solutions or with copper sulphate test tables but not with tests based on enzymatic glucose oxidates rections. On the other hand, A false positive direct coombs test has  reported during treatment with cephalosprin antibiotics. Therefore it should  recognized that a positive Coombs test may due to the drug.

Overdose Symptoms & Treatment Help

There is no experience with overdoses with this medicine. Meanwhile, Adverse reactions seen at dose levels up to 2g Cefix (Cefixime) in normal subjects does not differ from the profile seen in patients treated at the recommended doses. It not removed from the circulation in significant quantities by dialysis.
